The Nelson Downriver
Canoe and Kayak Race

Food and Awards After the Race
This year's cookout was the best yet. Nancy Welker lays out a gourmet repast for hungry paddlers.

After the bellies are full the award ceremony can begin.

Almost Heaven - Jimbo Carey's banjo pickin' kept us flowing like a river.

Just some Nelson Area Paddlers hangin' by the river.

The Outstanding Paddler Award goes to Karla Havens

The Outstanding Paddler Award occupies a place of honor at the Nelson County Tourism Office in Lovingston. The office was visited by 14,000 persons last year alone. This honor role of paddlers goes back to '97.

With her partner, the phenomenal Ed Sharp (winner of the 1998 Outstanding Paddler Award) the two turned in the fastest time of the day by 2.5 minutes.

OK Karla, we know it's yours.

Like you've never seen one of those before, Kirk.

Sue Saliba accepts her well-deserved 1st place medal in the K1 Women's class

Dave and Andrew Welker - this father/son team has great promise for the future.
With Dave's father, Phil, in the background we see three generations of Welker paddlers.

Dave Thomas (Mr. T) searches for his sunglasses.

Tom Eick and Roxanne Ingersall ratcheted the competition up a notch in the mixed tandem class.
